Monthly Review March 2022

The spring month of March presented itself in our region with an average temperature of
5.1 °C as 1.3 degrees too warm compared to the climate reference period 1961-1990.
The sun shone for a total of 235 hours. This corresponds to a significant increase of 126
Hours. This set a new March record since records began
Sunshine duration reached. On 17.3. and on March 29th the Sahara greeted us with its dust,
so that on March 17th (Fig. 1) the sun could only be seen as a faint disc for almost the whole day.
The sum of all individual precipitation measurements reached 19.7 mm in Coswig in March.
The monthly total thus corresponded to 53% of the reference value for this month. we
thus registered a very dry month. The previous annual precipitation balance
2022 was thus reduced to an increase of 11mm. Only 15.1 fell in Dresden-Klotzsche
mm. This March turned out to be the second driest since 1961 (after 1984).
Almost all of the space between the Baltic Sea and the northern border of Saxony fell
no precipitation at all in March 2022. In many places there is extreme drought.

The exceptionally sunny and dry weather in Germany was
characterized by the prevalence of extensive and powerful anticyclones, with the
almost until the end of the month the weather-determining high "Peter" (Fig. 2 / as "monumental
High") around 20.3. via Denmark and northern Germany even for new ones
Air pressure records for the month of March (1052 hPa).
