Monthly review August 2023
August was too warm in our region (rank 13 since 1961), too wet and there was less
sunshine than the long-term average.
Compared to the climate reference period 1961-1990, the month of August was 2.0 degrees
too warm with a mean temperature of 19.7 °C. Hot days were recorded on 15 and 19
August. In the long term, August has been warmer by an average of 2.6 degrees since 1961.
The sun shone for a total of 191 hours. This corresponds to a small minus of 5 hours. In the
months of August since 1961, the sunshine duration in Dresden has increased by an average
of 41 hours.
The sum of all individual measurements of precipitation in August reached 93.7 mm in
Coswig (110 mm in Dresden-Klotzsche). Thus, the past August proved to be too wet in all
areas of our region. The annual precipitation balance so far in 2023 is now back in positive in
Coswig after the wet August, with a plus of 18 mm. In Dresden-Klotzsche, precipitation in the
month of August has increased by 11 mm on average and in the long term since 1961.
Weather pattern:
Overall, a changeable weather character prevailed. Troughs, low-pressure and high-pressure
weather alternated. Most regions of Germany received more precipitation in August than
the climate average. Especially south of the Danube to the northern edge of the Alps,
however, there were considerable amounts of rain, where more than 300 mm or litres per
square metre of water fell from the sky (Fig. 1). As a result, the rivers in southern Bavaria
flooded at the end of the month.
